MENA Hot Tea Market Overview:

Tea is an aromatic non-alcoholic beverage, it is prepared from the leaves of Camellia Sinensis, an Asian shrub. It is the second most consumed beverage after water. It is available in a variety of forms such as black tea, green tea, oolong tea, and white tea. Though there are many varieties of tea, all of them come from the same plant. It is the method of processing that differs. The countries that are the highest producers of tea globally are India and China. The drink is popular among all age groups. Tea also offers several health benefits due to the presence of antioxidants, flavanols, tannins, and other ingredients in it. Its consumption on a limited and daily basis has proven to reduce the chances of several health issues such as heart attacks and blood pressure fluctuations. Tea also helps in improving the overall immune system of the body. Tea is generally served as a hot or cold beverage. This report analyzes the hot tea market in the Middle East and North African countries. The market is analyzed across Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, UAE, and other MENA countries.

The hot tea market in Arab countries is influenced by young consumers with high disposable income, which in turn have encouraged companies to offer a host of flavors and ingredients that can satiate the taste and demand of the millennials. In addition, the tea consumption has penetrated the regional market with the significant influx of tea-loving population, owing to its numerous health benefits. Black tea constitutes about 90% of the tea consumption in the Middle East. In addition, these countries serve as a re-export hub for hot tea and coffee. For instance, as per the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency, UAE exported $368.7 million worth of coffee and tea in 2015. More than 42% of the total export was reported from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and other key international markets.

Prominent market players have launched different categories of products in these regions to increase customer base. For instance, Tetley, one of the emerging key players in the Middle East, entered the loose tea market by offering a unique product, Tetley Loose Tea, which is a blend of long and short tea leaves available in two variants. In addition, the companys innovation includes Tetley Black with Mint, which is based on the dietary preferences of consumers in the region who take their black tea with fresh mint leaves.

The emerging markets and urbanization in the developing countries primarily contribute to the growth of the hot tea market. The per capita consumption of hot tea varies from country to country in MENA as there has been variations in consumption trends for other hot drinks such as coffee, chocolate-based hot drinks, malt-based hot drinks, and others. Countries that have a well-established hot tea industry or have consumption of hot tea as a part of their culture, especially Turkey and Egypt have witnessed the highest consumption.

Moreover, growth in demand from young, health-conscious consumers and periodic launch of new flavors & varieties are anticipated to provide lucrative opportunities for the expansion of the market.
Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • The main growth drivers include the increase in awareness of the health benefits associated with the consumption of hot tea, increase in consumer base across the MENA region, low cost of tea as compared to other beverages, easy availability of the beverage, and innovations resulting in new varieties and flavors of tea.

Restraints

  • Side effects associated with excess hot tea consumption is likely to reduce the demand for hot tea, causing the market to slow down.
  • Rise in trend of coffee consumption is expected to hamper the growth of the market during the forecast period.
